The Rivalry Game

Consider this scenario. School A leaves its conference for greener pastures. School B, in the old "lesser" conference would like to meet School A on the football field in an annual rivalry game. After all, the schools are located 83 miles apart. Some of their most attended games occur when they play each other. The Athletics Directors agree that this rivalry will help sell tickets, promote the game in the area, and raise awareness for both programs. In September, they announce plans for 6-year series. Fans rejoice.

Consider this scenario. School C leaves its conference for greener pastures. School D, in the old "lesser" conference would like to meet School C on the football field in an annual rivalry game. After all, the schools are located 98 miles apart. Some of their most attended games occur when they play each other. The Athletics Directors and coaches agree that this rivalry will help sell tickets, promote the game in the area, and raise awareness for both programs. In August School C is forced to play School D for three more years. After 2008 this "rivalry" will be no more. Done.
