SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI 19, UCF 14: THE RECAP

Click on Kevin Smith to read the recap

OVERVIEW: Two turnovers on the 1-yard line doomed UCF on Tuesday night in a 19-14 Conference USA loss to Southern Miss. Kevin Smith, UCF's sophomore running back, fumbled on the Southern Miss 1 with 4 1/2 minutes left in the third quarter. Then, early in the fourth, UCF QB Steven Moffett threw an interception to Southern Miss LB Jerome Lyons, who returned it 4 yards for the decisive touchdown.

TURNING POINT: When Smith fumbled on the Golden Eagles' 1 in the third quarter, the Knights -- down 10-7 at the time -- were just a few feet from seizing their first lead. Instead, Southern Miss recovered the fumble in the end zone and kicked a field goal just before the end of the quarter.
