DAVIE — Fighting off one member of the Feely family in order to win a job should have been enough for Estero High graduate Matt Prater.
It should have been, but now it won't be,
Prater, who turns 23 on Aug. 10, will begin his competition with seventh-year veteran Jay Feely for the job of Miami Dolphins kicker in earnest Saturday morning. That's when the Dolphins open training camp at their practice facility next to Nova Southeastern University.
As a freshman at the University of Central Florida in 2005, Prater had to beat out Feely's younger brother, Ryan, which he did. He never relinquished the job, finishing tied for the most field goals in school history with 50. Even though he was released by the Detroit Lions at the end of last year's training camp, Prater left an impression by connecting on all four of his field goals and both PATs.
