Southern Miss saw its lead in the East Division vanish Sunday when Central Florida rolled into M.M. Roberts Stadium and left with a convincing 34-17 win.
The loss left the Golden Eagles at 4-4 overall and 3-2 in Conference USA play, knocking USM from first place to fourth in the East thanks to four turnovers against a team that had only forced seven all year. It also marked the worst home conference loss since a 34-17 defeat at the hands of Tulsa three years ago and gave the Golden Eagles two conference home losses for the second time in three seasons.
Central Florida, with its first win against the Golden Eagles in three games, improved to 5-3 and 3-1 behind the running of Kevin Smith, who scored two touchdowns and rushed for 175 yards on a career-high 43 carries.
