ORLANDO -- With Miami, Florida and Florida State, other Division I football programs in the state of Florida have to scratch and claw for every bit of respect they can get.
So, when UCF and South Florida get together, it's not just a matter of winning another football game. Yes, pride is on the line. But, more importantly, the outcome can alter perceptions of two programs struggling to reach the level of the aforementioned national powers.
"I think this game helps our program and helps our fan base because if you beat teams from Florida, you are saying something about your program nationally," UCF coach George O'Leary said. "I am always anxious to play teams out of our conference and teams from the state of Florida. Any time when you play good competition, you help to build your program."
