Struggling UCF latest to leave Memphis with a win
After seven straight losses -- its longest streak of futility in 20 years -- the University of Memphis found itself in position to end its frustration Saturday night at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium.
It had battled Central Florida, a team mired in as disappointing season as the Tigers, for four quarters. With less than two minutes left, it had moved inside the UCF 35, converting once on fourth-and-7 from its 26 en route.
What the Tigers needed was to drive deep enough for a field goal to bask in victory for the first time since early September. What the Tigers got was more frustration.
A potential game-winning drive fizzled on fourth-and-7 from the UCF 39 with 1:10 left, and the Golden Knights snapped their four-game losing streak with a 26-24 win before 20,611.
