With the Knights 2-7, George O'Leary eyes ways to make strides for the future.

When official word came that UCF had been selected for its first-ever bowl last season, Coach George O'Leary's eyes began to twinkle.

Yes, the Golden Knights were about to get more exposure than they'd ever had. And, yes, it was a major boost for UCF's football profile. But more than anything, O'Leary's eyes were sparkling for a reason only a coach could understand -- more practice time.

This season, though, the Knights' 2-7 record guarantees they will be home for Christmas. No extra exposure. No boosting of the profile. And no extra practices.

"Life moves on," O'Leary said. "I think the big charge now is to see where you're at. . . . I'm going to look at younger players these next three weeks. As long as they can win a game for us, I'll look at them."
