New coordinator John Skladany has spent the past 10 years at Iowa State.

It wasn't a former coaching buddy, but UCF Coach George O'Leary did go with an old friend in hiring his new defensive coordinator.

John Skladany, who has spent the past 10 seasons as Iowa State's defensive coordinator and helped take the Cyclones defense to new heights the past five seasons, was officially named to the post Monday.

He takes over the coordinator duties from Lance Thompson, who will continue to serve as a defensive coach for the Golden Knights.

During his 10 seasons with the Cyclones, the defense improved dramatically and his 2005 unit ranked 12th nationally against the run and 35th in total defense. Iowa State advanced to five bowl games during his tenure, which ended following the resignation of Coach Dan McCarney following a 4-8 finish this year. Iowa State's defense was ranked just 102nd in total defense in 2006, but that came after the loss of seven starters from its 2005 squad.

Holy cow. Central Florida scored a huge coup with this. Skladaney is going to bring a defense that is simply withering. This year's Iowa State defense was full of new players just learning the system. To get a full taste of how much the attack defense can greatly compensate for a less-than-stellar offense, check out ISU in '04 and '00.
