This one could be a smash

HATTIESBURG — A sprained ankle kept Southern Miss defensive tackle Sean Merrill on the sideline when the Golden Eagles visited UCF in Orlando last fall.

But Merrill is well aware of what's coming Sunday night when the Knights (4-3, 2-1 Conference USA) take on USM (4-3, 3-1) at Roberts Stadium.

"They're going for about 211 yards a game on the ground, and there's not a lot of teams in the country that are doing that," Merrill said. "They've got a good offensive line and a good running back and they're going to feed him 25 to 30 times a game."

Which is the same philosophy that USM has held over the years, relying on a heaping helping of smash-mouth football and may the best team win.
