UCF poses big threat to Miners in season finale

Conference USA tells us "Competition lives here," but evidently the Heisman race doesn't.

The obscurity of mid-major football is the only reason Central Florida running back Kevin Smith isn't at the front of it,because on the field, from snap to whistle, he's playing the game as well right now as it can be played.

"I think he has gotten better each week, each year," coach George O'Leary said of his star junior, who is first in the nation in scoring and second in rushing. "I think when he was a freshman, he was a kid that just tried to get the ball and get to the line of scrimmage as quickly as he could.

"As a sophomore, I think he started to see linemen and started to read (defenses). Now, I think he is like most good backs that carry the ball. They make the cut in the hole and they read the linebackers, the secondary level guys, because those are the guys that ultimately make the tackles.

"I think that is where he has improved himself."
