UCF's Smith adds to state's list of great running backs

The state of Florida has produced a number of great running backs, including all-time NFL rushing leader Emmitt Smith of the University of Florida.

But with 6:45 left in the second quarter, Kevin Smith did something no collegiate back in state history had ever done: With a 7-yard carry, he passed the 2,000-yard barrier. His 211 yards left him with 2,164 on the season, good for fourth all-time.

The season was expanded to 12 games last year. He will need 141 yards against Tulsa next week to win the national rushing title.

Some other marks from the junior: His 11th 100-yard game is a Conference USA single-season record; his 4,276 career yards break the Florida record, held by the University of Florida's Eric Rhett, who had 4,057 for the Gators from 1990-93; his 46 carries were a school record.
