UCF's defense is on the right track

As UCF prepares to open its Conference USA schedule against Memphis on Saturday, one of the many things it took with it into practice this week from its 35-32 loss to Texas were some positive strides for its defense.

Through two games this season, the Knights' defense has been the clear surprise. After ranking near the bottom of the nation and C-USA in nearly every category, the arrival of defensive coordinator John Skladany and defensive coaches Earnest Collins and Jim Panagos clearly is paying dividends.

There are still some holes that need clogging after giving up nearly 500 yards of total offense to the Longhorns on Saturday. There are also a lot of positives, though, such as forcing three turnovers and holding Texas to just 9-of-20 on third down.
