Knightro -- hit or miss?

Click on the pic to go to the link

UCF merchandise sales are up, but the new logo is news to some students.

The University of Central Florida's athletic logo, which debuted six months ago, has met with mixed reaction.

At the university, most students and fans approve, though some say mascot Knightro needs a makeover. At Central Florida businesses, retailers are delighted with the increased sales and buzz.

"The excitement has just been wonderful -- it's a great add-on for us," said Charlotte Begley, owner of Gator/Seminole/Knight Fever at 3702 Edgewater Drive in Orlando.

Begley, who also sells University of Florida and Florida State University merchandise, said sales of UCF merchandise are up from last year.

Other retailers have experienced similar results, reports Collegiate Licensing Co., a trademark and marketing company in Atlanta.

"Demand for officially licensed merchandise is at an all-time high for the University of Central Florida," said Ander Nickell, CLC university services representative.

No detail is too minor as UCF preps for big game

Click on the pick to read more

When preparing to host 50,000 screaming fans, you have to think really big -- and really small.

As small as a charcoal briquette.

That's because a lot of tailgaters at the University of Central Florida's first on-campus football game this Saturday will have to do something with their cooking fires before kickoff.
The solution? Bright-orange steel barrels labeled "HOT COALS."

UCF's campus makeover

The campus that seems "Under Construction Forever" still isn't finished.

But something big has emerged from all of that dust at the University of Central Florida.

Workers are putting the finishing touches on projects that have reshaped the campus unlike anything since the school opened its doors nearly four decades ago.

Big changes on campus

ORLANDO -- Jeramy Devane and his University of Central Florida teammates are fighting an urge.

In helmets and pads under the hot August sun, Devane and the Knights practice most days in the shadow of the glimmering new, $63 million Bright House Networks Stadium. But they don't play there until Sept. 15 -- after a game Sept. 1 at North Carolina State.

They're trying not to look ahead to the home opener against No. 4-rated Texas.

"It's kind of hard not to," said Devane, a starting guard who grew up in Ormond Beach and graduated from Seabreeze High School.

UCF after Palm Beach fans

Click on the logo to read more

TAMPA - The most interesting thing I learned at the first of two FSWA Media Days events didn’t come from coaches who will lead their teams against FAU this year.

While UF’s Urban Meyer and FIU’s Mario Cristobal went over their team’s strengths and weaknesses, the item that caught my attention was from - of all places - Central Florida .

According to a UCF athletic department official I talked to, the Knights are planning to increase their marketing efforts in Palm Beach County. Apparently new Athletic Director Keith Tribble, who used to run the Orange Bowl, believes UCF could make serious inroads to developing a following locally. The Knights want to do things like put their games on radio in West Palm Beach and want to explore other ways of courting new fans in FAU’s home county.

"The seating structure is 100 percent complete. They’re now working on seating and decking,” said Joe Devillier, Wharton-Smith senior project superintendent.
