Contest Means Plenty

ORLANDO George O'Leary has been walking a tightrope this week. The Central Florida coach and his players have had to play down the fact that today's game against South Florida in Tampa has any special significance despite the fact it overshadows anything else left on their schedule.

"Conference games are the biggest. This is the biggest because it's the next game," defensive end Ledger Douzable, from Tampa, summed up, though in contradictory fashion.

Maybe in the small world of Conference USA, in the handful of cities and towns around the country that have Conference USA teams, that's true. Anywhere else, you'd be hard pressed to find many people who can even name half the teams in C-USA, let alone care about who wins the championship.
