GREENVILLE, N.C. -- East Carolina struggled through several tests during a trying September.

Now the Pirates open October with another, perhaps previously unforeseen obstacle - a Central Florida team that boasts the nation's leading rusher in Kevin Smith.

Smith averages more than 178 yards per game, and will present problems for an East Carolina defense that held Virginia Tech to 33 yards rushing but gave up 397 to West Virginia.

"If (Smith) gets into space, he has the ability to make you miss," East Carolina coach Skip Holtz said.
