Culpepper is Raiders' rent-a-QB

The secret to understanding Daunte Culpepper's contract with the Oakland Raiders has much to do with the situation surrounding JaMarcus Russell, true, but it is also at least a bit about Josh McCown and Andrew Walter.

Culpepper worked out for the Raiders on Monday in Florida, then came to Napa on Tuesday to show coach Lane Kiffin the depth and breadth of his ability. The Raiders were properly impressed/boxed into a corner to accede to Culpepper's principal demand - the right to be a rental player.

And so it goes. The Raiders drafted Russell to be the next Culpepper, but can't get their own two hands to interlock with Russell's people, so they got the old Culpepper for awhile. And Culpepper committed to the Raiders for the shortest possible term, hoping to remain upright long enough to convince the rest of the NFL he has recovered from his knee injury and career freefall.
