GREEN BAY — Atari Bigby isn't the Green Bay Packers' new starting safety just yet, but the team plans to give him every chance to take veteran Marquand Manuel's job in the coming weeks.
It began Monday, when Bigby worked with the No. 1 defense as the team returned to practice following Saturday night's preseason victory at Pittsburgh.
Manuel worked with the first string during an 11-on-11 period early in practice, but during the main team session, it was Bigby who paired with Nick Collins in the back end.
"We're trying to give Atari and opportunity to step up. And it's something we'll continue to do as we move forward," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said after practice. "I think Atari Bigby is a very talented safety. I think his range is as good as anyone we have in that younger group. He needs to clean up some things. He's young. He needs to play and needs opportunities. He's a very talented young man."
