Coaches happy with defense's start

The unit got a boost from sophomore Alex Thompson, who was subbing at MLB.

In the days leading up to UCF's season opener at N.C. State, while the coaching staff was eager to see how its defense had improved, there was a bit of nervousness.

For all the talent and improvement the unit had made across the board, at the linebacker position there was still uncertainty.

While the preseason scratches of Jordan Richards (season ending shoulder injury), Troy Kelly and Kyle Fowler (both left program) had been overcome in fall camp, news came early last week that sent the coaching staff into hustle mode again.
