Players pumped for first game at new on-campus football stadium
ORLANDO - Forced to ride a bus some 15 miles from campus to the stadium and then bum a ride from his parents back to his dorm room, University of Central Florida quarterback Kyle Israel never really considered the Citrus Bowl much of a home.
And the awkward location was just one of the features that left UCF's football team feeling like orphans all of those years while growing up in the dilapidated Citrus Bowl near downtown Orlando.
Toilets didn't always flush and sinks often backed up. It was always a mystery to see if warm water would pour from the showers. The locker room was a gray eyesore. And the cavernous, 70,000-seat stadium often had the feel of drinking alone in a bar even when 30,000 fans packed the lower bowl.
