WHO'S THAT GUY?: If the 57,283 fans at Carter-Finley Stadium didn't know who UCF running back Kevin Smith was before the game, it didn't take them long to discover him. He scored on an 80-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage and had 177 yards in the first half as UCF built a 25-3 lead.

"He had a great game for us," UCF coach George O'Leary said. "It was definitely good to quiet the crowd some from the start."

Smith was slowed in the second half, but finished with a career-high 217 yards. He ran for 934 yards last season in only nine games because of a shoulder injury.

Nonetheless, State's defense was impressed.
"He ran hard, very hard and very fast," State defensive tackle DeMario Pressley said.
