It was the summer of '83 and Lou Saban, as old-school a football coach as anyone ever to walk a sideline, was standing on a nondescript, sun-baked practice field on the campus of the University of Central Florida.
He was wearing a white golf shirt and a black baseball cap — both emblazoned with the letters "UCF" — and those tight, polyester shorts that all the coaches wore back then, along with a pair of Unitas-era, black high-top shoes.
And even at age 61, he retained a rugged look and a fiercely competitive drive that made you believe he still could knock down a linebacker to get to the end zone.
