Teams spirited competition hasn't carried over from the MAC years

It was supposed to be the natural rivalry.

Carry-on luggage, if you will, as part of UCF and Marshall's move over to Conference USA from the lesser Mid-American Conference in 2005.

Not only were both programs similar in size and football history, but also faced similar hurdles in states in which they are not the sole attraction.

Three years later, however, the quick, once intense MAC-sized rivalry that many thought would be a no-brainer in the new league, hasn't materialized.

Saturday the Knights and Thundering Herd meet for the third time as members of the C-USA East Division, with UCF owning a two-game winning streak after three straight wins by Marshall in the MAC.
