Herd-UCF rivalry still has potential

ORLANDO, Fla. — Remember when Marshall vs. Central Florida was the “instant rivalry?”

I do, but the memory is becoming distant. It was a Friday night in 2002, when coach Mike Kruczek’s Golden Knights barged into the Mid-American Conference and barked about world domination. Step One was to knock off the MAC’s daddy, the Thundering Herd.

Time, conferences and stadiums have changed, some for better, some not. That depends on your perspective — and your school colors.

But I think fans of both schools can agree on one point — this game will be a real hoot if both programs would get their act together at the same time. It’s a rotten shame that there have been six games played between these teams, with only two of them compelling.
